Current stage: Information & Content
Use this guide when the parish does not already have a suitable Google Analytics account. The goal is for the parish—not BOTH/AND or one temporary volunteer—to own its Analytics and Search Console history.
You will not need to install tracking code. BOTH/AND will connect and verify Google Site Kit on the completed website. The parish may complete the Analytics setup itself or ask BOTH/AND to do so after identifying the Google account that will own it.
1. Choose a Durable Parish Google Account
The best owner is a parish-controlled Google account that remains with the parish when clergy, staff, or volunteers change. When the parish uses Google Workspace, this may be a role-based user such as analytics@yourparish.org or another established parish account. A forwarding alias or email group cannot own the services by itself.
Do not use a web designer’s personal account, a temporary volunteer account without a transition plan, or an address the parish cannot recover. Google allows individual users to receive access without sharing the owner’s password. Learn how Google Analytics users are managed.
2. Secure the Owner Account
- Add current recovery information controlled by the parish or an authorized long-term representative.
- Turn on two-step verification.
- Keep recovery codes and account records in the parish’s secure recordkeeping system—not in the BOTH/AND form, upload folder, or ordinary email.
Google provides instructions for account recovery information and two-step verification.
3. Create the Analytics Account and Property
- Sign in to the chosen parish account and open Google Analytics.
- Choose Start Measuring, or open Admin and choose Create, then Account.
- Use the parish’s official name for the Analytics account.
- Create one property named “[PARISH NAME] Website.”
- Select the correct reporting timezone and currency, complete Google’s questions, and accept the applicable terms.
See Google’s current website Analytics setup instructions.
4. Create the Website Data Stream
- In the new property, open Admin, then Data Streams, and add a Web stream.
- Enter the final public website address. If the final domain is not confirmed, ask BOTH/AND before continuing.
- Name the stream “[PARISH NAME] Website,” create it, and record the Measurement ID beginning with G-.
Do not paste tracking code into the temporary site, current site, theme, or another plugin. BOTH/AND will connect the approved property through Google Site Kit on the live website and verify that the tag appears only once.
5. Return to the Analytics Form
Provide the parish owner-account email, the Analytics property name if known, and the G- Measurement ID if the property and stream are ready. Never provide a password, verification code, backup code, or recovery information.
If the parish asks BOTH/AND to complete setup, it may stop after securing the owner account and submitting the account email. BOTH/AND will arrange the specific access or brief screen-sharing step.
What Happens Next
BOTH/AND will confirm ownership and the correct domain, connect Site Kit and Search Console on production, verify that Analytics records the live website once, and include the verified Google services in the standard privacy policy for parish approval.
What Happens Next?
After the parish account and website data stream are ready, return to the Analytics form and provide the requested account information without sending passwords or verification codes.
